Parco Nazionale del Gargano has been recognised as a protected area, of which also the Isole Tremiti play a part, which contain the Riserva Marina, and the Comunità Montana del Gargano, reaching an extension of 118,114 hectares, arriving at being one of the largest in Italy.

The particularity which distinguishes this land is certainly that of the Karst phenomenon, which though the centuries has created some of the most spectacular underground caves rich with stalagmites and, further enriched by the archaeological finds dating back to the Palaeolithic.
To this is also added the sea caves of unparalleled splendour and charm, not to mention the presence of numerous sinkholes, valleys originating from the collapse of caves beneath, the most significant of which is the famous Dolina Pozzatina, more than 100 metres deep and 500 metres wide, classifying itself as the largest in all of Europe.

The particular structure of Parco Nazionale del Gargano has, throughout the years, generated many types of habitats which range from forest to Mediterranean scrub and from the high plateau to the steep cliffs on the sea, so as to arrive at hosting various and numerous species of animals and vegetation, rendering its view unique.
