The saint, whose remains are today carefully held in the Chiesa di Padre Pio built in his honour in 2004, moved from even before his death to now, an incredible number of pilgrims, who have concentrated their attention in the most cases exclusively on the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, headquarters of the Capuchin monks of which St. Pio played a part.
Even the artistic and architectural wealth of San Giovanni Rotondo, let alone its historic importance, are tied to the central citizen, dating back to 1095 and placed on the ruins of a village that existed back in the 4th century BC.

The most famous, among the many churches of elevated interest, is actually the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, called the Rotonda, as it is located on the base of an ancient circular temple of a dedicated to the two-faced pagan god Janus of the 3rd/2nd century BC, which renders it one of the region’s most ancient religious buildings.

But characterising the realm of the city centre are also the few, but ever fascinating, ruins of the old city walls and towers which fortified San Giovanni Rotondo in Medieval times, of which today can be seen the 4 entrance gates, and a couple of the 15 towers originally built in defence of the area.
